Datums, Coordinate Systems, and Map Projections 101
Datums, Coordinate Systems, and Map Projections 101
This webinar is the fifth episode in our six-part series on GIS and Remote Sensing. It will explain the fundamental principles and methods used to tie imagery, elevation, GIS, and CAD data to real-world coordinate systems. The presentation will explain how spatial reference systems are established and how changes in measurement and positioning technologies have impacted their development over time. It will also cover the relationship and transformations between the most common horizontal and vertical datums used in the United States.
This discussion will provide a foundation for understanding the National Spatial Reference System (NSRS) modernization planned by the National Geodetic Survey, including changes to State Plane Coordinate Systems, which is already underway and planned for public release by the middle of 2025.
After viewing the webinar, attendees can request a Professional Development Hour (PDH) Certificate of Attendance.
Karen Schuckman is the Senior Director of Remote Sensing and Geospatial Services at RRC. She is also an Associate Teaching Professor of Geography at Penn State University, where she teaches remote sensing and geospatial technology. In addition to her work at RRC and academic pursuits, Karen serves as the Executive Director of the American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing. Her contributions to the geospatial field are significant. Karen led the utilization of remotely sensed imagery during the Hurricane Katrina response and spearheaded lidar acquisition for the first phase of the North Carolina Floodplain Mapping Program, among many other projects. Before that, she worked with the USGS National Mapping Division and served as Vice-Chair of the NOAA Advisory Committee on Commercial Remote Sensing. This discussion will provide a foundation for understanding the National Spatial Reference System (NSRS) modernization planned by the National Geodetic Survey, including changes to State Plane Coordinate Systems, which is already underway and planned for public release by the middle of 2025.
